Electronic filing exceeds total for all of 2010

April 26, 2011

BATON ROUGE – The number of taxpayers filing Louisiana individual income tax returns electronically has surpassed the total for all of 2010, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) announced Tuesday.

As of April 25, LDR had received 1,420,342 electronic returns. This exceeds the 1,373,333 electronic returns the agency received between January 1 and December 31, 2010.

“This surge in the adoption of electronic filing demonstrates the confidence that taxpayers and tax preparers have in this method,” said Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges. “Electronic filing is the fastest, easiest, most error-free method of filing tax returns.”

So far, taxpayers have filed approximately 335,000 paper returns this year.
Electronic filing saves time and money for taxpayers and for state government. The average processing time for refunds for electronic returns is about ten business days. For paper returns it is 12 to 16 weeks.

The Department of Revenue operates Louisiana File Online, a free, web-based tax filing application on the LDR website at Louisiana is one of only 22 states that make free web filing available through state government websites.

Other methods of electronic filing include commercially available software packages with state filing options.

The deadline for filing 2010 Louisiana Individual Income Tax returns is Monday, May 16, 2011.
