What Is a Wage Garnishment?
A wage garnishment allows the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) to collect unpaid state taxes by requiring your employer to withhold a portion of your wages and send those funds directly to LDR.
A wage garnishment may apply to:
- Wages
- Salaries
- Bonuses
- Commissions
- Other compensation
Your employer is required by law to continue withholding the specified amount until your tax liability has been paid in full or LDR releases the garnishment.
Why Were My Wages Garnished?
LDR may issue a wage garnishment after:
- A tax liability has been assessed.
- Required notices have been issued.
- The tax debt remains unpaid.
- Other collection efforts have not resolved the balance.
A wage garnishment is one of several collection actions authorized under Louisiana law.

Can I Stop a Wage Garnishment?
Possibly.
A wage garnishment generally remains in effect until:
- Your tax liability has been paid in full.
- LDR releases the garnishment.
- Another resolution is approved under applicable law.
If you cannot pay the balance immediately, contact LDR to discuss available resolution options.
What Happens Next?
Once LDR issues a wage garnishment, your employer is required to begin withholding the specified amount from your wages and remit those funds to LDR.
The garnishment generally remains in effect until:
- Your tax liability has been paid in full.
- LDR approves another resolution, when applicable.
- LDR notifies your employer to discontinue the withholding.
Continue reviewing your account through LaTAP to monitor payments and your remaining balance.
Having the following information available may help resolve your inquiry more quickly:
- Revenue Account Number or Social Security Number
- Copy of the wage garnishment notice, if available
- Employer name
- Tax periods involved
- Recent payment information
- Any correspondence received from LDR
Payment Options
Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to:
- Pay your balance in full.
- Make a payment through LaTAP.
- Pay by credit card.
- Discuss other available resolution options with LDR.
Recommendation
To help avoid your employer receiving a wage garnishment order, respond promptly to LDR notices and resolve your tax liability as early as possible. Paying your balance in full or contacting LDR before additional collection actions become necessary may help prevent a wage garnishment.
