The Refund Processing Timeline

IF FILED ONLINE, processing begins as soon as a return is received. The filing software should give a confirmation that a return was received. Processing of electronic returns can take up to 4 weeks.

IF FILED BY PAPER, the processing time is extended due to post office handling, mail delivery, mail room sorting, and data entry of the paper return before processing can begin. Processing of paper returns can take up to 8 weeks.

Step 1

Processing begins by checking returns for accuracy. This can take up to 14 days.

Step 2

The refund goes through approval and preparation. This can take up to 14 days.

Step 3

The refund is deposited. Usually this is 4 weeks after filing online or 8 weeks after filing by paper. Please keep the following things in mind:

  • Direct Deposit refunds are transmitted to the bank account on the return. Some banks can take up to 3 business days from the date of transmission to complete the deposit.
  • Refunds for first-time filers are always issued by a paper refund check.
  • Changes to the refund option cannot be made after filing.
  • Processing of amended returns follows the same

These estimates generally apply to most error-free returns. Processing times will vary. Calling the Louisiana Department of Revenue will not expedite your refund beyond this.
