Why does the postmark date matter?

For mailed returns or payments, Louisiana law generally uses the USPS postmark date to decide whether the submission is on time.

If the postmark date is after the due date:

  • The return or payment may be considered late

  • Penalties and interest may apply

This can happen even if the item was mailed on time.
