Does the constitutional amendment require a pay raise for teachers?

Yes. If the constitutional amendment passes, an approximately $2 billion payment will be made to pay down the retirement debt of the Teachers Retirement System of Louisiana. This will reduce required retirement costs paid by local school systems by nearly $200 million per year. The constitutional amendment requires those school districts to use the savings to give teachers and support workers a permanent salary increase of at least $2,000 per teacher and $1,000 per support worker depending on the amount of each system’s savings.
