Important Announcement

How do I register for withholding tax?

If you are required to withhold Louisiana income tax from your employees' wages, you must register for a Louisiana Withholding Tax account before filing withholding tax returns or remitting withholding taxes.

Do not register for a Withholding Tax account until you begin withholding Louisiana income tax from your employees' wages. Registering too early may result in unnecessary filing requirements before you have employees subject to withholding.

New businesses

If you are starting a new business, visit the Starting or Buying a Business LDR FAQ for helpful information.

Once you are ready to register your business with LDR, visit LaTAP and click on the Register My Business link in the registration section.

During the registration process, select Withholding Tax only if you will have employees subject to Louisiana income tax withholding.

Existing businesses

If your business is already registered with LDR and you need to add a Withholding Tax account, log in to LaTAP and register for the additional tax account.

After your withholding account is established, LDR will assign your filing frequency based on the amount of Louisiana income tax you withhold and notify you of your filing requirements.

Recommendation

Before registering, have the following information available:

  • Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), if applicable

  • Legal business name

  • Business and mailing addresses

  • Owner or responsible party information

  • Date you will begin withholding Louisiana income tax

  • Business activity information

Once your account is established:

  • File all required withholding tax returns electronically.

  • Remit withholding taxes by the applicable due date.

  • File required returns even if no tax is due, unless your account has been officially closed.

  • Notify LDR when you no longer have employees subject to Louisiana withholding so your withholding account can be closed.

Important: Registering with the Louisiana Secretary of State or obtaining a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) does not automatically create a Louisiana Withholding Tax account.
