Tax preparer arrested for gambling-related tax fraud scheme

Updated May 14, 2025

BATON ROUGE – A Louisiana tax preparer faces felony charges over an alleged scheme to steal tens of thousands of dollars in fraudulent income tax refunds.

Investigators with the Louisiana Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Division say Todd Ramon Mabry (booking photo), of Amite, submitted a false tax withholding form in the name of an unsuspecting client claiming $158,233 in fabricated gambling winnings at L’Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge. Based on the tax withholding calculated for the phony gambling winnings, investigators say Mabry then attempted to claim a state income tax refund of $25,552.

Mabry was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on May 13, 2025, on charges of attempted theft, computer fraud and filing false public records. The investigation continues into other persons of interest in this alleged fraud scheme.

Todd Mabry is the 77th person arrested under a joint anti-tax fraud initiative of the Louisiana Department of Revenue and the state attorney general’s office.
